Hokuspokus Hexenschuss

I feel as if every year that I do not see Father Rhine again, my life is being drained away from me. Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921): Composer of one of the most successful operas of all time, a Rhinelander by passion, a lover of fine wines and good coffee, and also a visitor to opium dens in Tangier. He has erected monuments to all these passions in his compositions. This volume sheds light on previously unknown aspects of Humperdinck's biography and work, documents previously inaccessible sources, and presents the first scholarly considerations of his last opera, Gaudeamus. Insights from the memorial year 2021 (the 100th anniversary of Humperdinck's death) and the special exhibition Hokuspokus Hexenschuss in Siegburg are included in the contributions of this book. The editors, Tim Michalak and Christian Ubber, present this continuation of the exhibition companion book Hokuspokus Hexenschuss as a follow-up volume to their biographical-musical Humperdinck reader from 2017. The authors of the contributions compiled here are experts in their respective fields. Like the two previous books, this volume aims to appeal not only to the academic community but also to all music lovers who wish to learn more about the composer of Hänsel und Gretel.
