Europe is considered the Christian West. But how Christian is the continent today? Is Christianity dying, as some suspect? Or is it undergoing a profound transition after the end of the Constantinian era? And finally: How can the Gospel be a source of hope in today's tumultuous world? Such questions are at the heart of the European pastoral theology presented here. It can draw on the rich material from the European Values Studies 1981–2020. However, what has been lacking so far is a pastoral-theological reflection on the actions of the Church across the entire continent of Europe: a European pastoral theology, indeed. This gap is filled by Paul M. Zulehner, who has researched sociologically and pastorally in the highly diverse regions of Europe for many years.
