Flood events are among the most common and costly natural disasters. The floods of 2002 caused not only immense human suffering but also damages exceeding 20 billion euros across Europe. Due to climate change and human activities, flood events are becoming increasingly frequent. In the 1950s, there were only six major flooding disasters; by the 1990s, this number had risen to 26. Especially shortly after significant flood disasters, there is a call for improvements and expansions of existing flood protection systems, as well as the establishment of new ones. Particularly critical areas that need protection include densely populated and utilized waterfront zones in city centers or industrial areas. However, stationary flood protection systems like dikes or walls require a lot of space and often conflict with other interests such as tourism and landscape aesthetics. Mobile flood protection systems offer a solution to this dilemma. This study examines and describes the known mobile flood protection systems in detail, with a special focus on the systems designed for planned mobile flood protection.
