Product details

In 1776, a law was enacted in the Dutch Republic that was intended solely for black people and people of color who arrived in the Netherlands as slaves. How and why did this happen? What did it mean for the affected individuals and their daily lives? Using a large and largely unexplored corpus of sources, Julia Holzmann investigates these questions in an interdisciplinary and intersectional manner. She examines the close interconnection between colonies and the metropolis, as well as legal, linguistic, and social practices, including racism. Her biographical microstudies provide insight into the history of black people and people of color in the Netherlands.
