Product details
The Historical Dictionary of Philosophy (HWPh), compiled between 1971 and 2007 with the collaboration of more than 1500 scholars, is one of the most comprehensive, important and successful publication projects in the recent German-speaking humanities. In contrast to other lexicons or encyclopaedias, the HWPh is not based on a history of philosophical ideas or problems, but on the history of philosophical concepts. In 12 text volumes and a concluding index volume, the lexicon documents the origin and genesis of a total of 3670 philosophical terms in 17144 columns and around 6000 articles using numerous precise references and references, and describes the changes in their meaning and function from their first appearance to the present day. The concept of the conceptual-historical method makes the position and meaning of individual terms in certain epochs or with certain philosophers comprehensible both synchronically and diachronically, as well as their changes in meaning within the history of Western philosophy. In order to illustrate the specific philosophical conceptual work in the context of the entire scientific system, terms from neighbouring disciplines - theology, psychology, education, sociology, history and art history, politics, jurisprudence, medicine and the natural sciences - are also dealt with. "A globally unique standard work for conceptual archaeologists." Der Spiegel "A work that has no equal - not even in the Anglo-Saxon world. It will certainly not be possible to spell this century without the dictionary." NZZ "It will soon prove its indispensability notably for individual workers in many fields of history and science." History of Science, London "One can only enviously congratulate this grandiose undertaking." Wiener Jahrbuch für Philosophie "The world's largest project of conceptual demon defence."
