The Historical Dictionary of Philosophy is published with the collaboration of more than 1500 subject experts in conjunction with Günther Bien, Tilman Borsche, Ulrich Dierse, Wilhelm Goerdt, Oskar Graefe, Wolfgang Hübener, Anton Hügli, Helmut Hühn, Friedrich Kambartel, Friedrich Kaulbach, Theo Kobusch, Ralf Konersmann, Margarita Kranz, Hermann Lübbe, Odo Marquard, Reinhart Maurer, Stephan Meier-Oeser, Friedrich Niewöhner, Ludger Oeing-Hanhoff, Willi Oelmüller, Thomas Rentsch, Kurt Röttgers, Eckart Scheerer, Heinrich Schepers, Gunter Scholtz, Winfried Schröder, Martin Seils, and Robert Spaemann, edited by Joachim Ritter, Karlfried Gründer, and Gottfried Gabriel. This is a completely revised edition of the Dictionary of Philosophical Terms by Rudolf Eisler. The work is under the responsibility of the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz, and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Senator for Science, Research, and Culture of the State of Berlin.

The entire work is completed with Volume 13 of the index. Text volumes 1-12 encompass approximately 6000 articles and article parts on 3670 philosophical terms from theory of representation to cynicism, spanning 17144 text columns; they do not include biographical articles.
