Product details
The first of 13 volumes of the Historical Lexicon of Switzerland includes nearly 2000 articles, ranging from the entry on the von Aa family to the keyword Basel (Prince-Bishopric). Notably, extensive treatises on the cantons of Aargau, Appenzell-Ausserrhoden, and Appenzell-Innerrhoden stand out, along with a number of multi-page articles on topics such as superstition, voting, nobility, agricultural constitution, Alemanni, common land, aging, employees, antisemitism, labor movement, archives, army, poverty, enlightenment, Augusta Raurica, foreign trade, emigration, banks, and baroque. A prime example of the methodical and thematic comprehensive approach of the HLS is the article on the Alps, which covers geography, politics, society, culture, and everyday life in the Alpine region over more than 30 pages. Additionally, there are hundreds of biographies and geographical articles such as Altdorf (UR) and Baden, as well as entries on Africa and Argentina. The texts are complemented by around 500 mostly colored illustrations, maps, and graphics, along with 50 tables. A 40-page introduction outlines the structure and history of the lexicon.
