Herodotus' Histories lead to the origins of Western culture, in Ionia from the 8th to the 6th century BC. Beginning with the ancient Oriental empires of Lydia, Babylon, and Egypt, the text allows us to witness the emergence of the Greek city-states and the Persian Empire, culminating in the Greek-Persian conflict of the Persian Wars. Within this world-historical context, a wealth of excursions, individual episodes, anecdotes, and reports are organized, showcasing the "Father of History" as an outstanding and entertaining storyteller. The complete translation by August Horneffer has been carefully modernized by Heinz-Günther Nesselrath, who has also provided a new introduction and updated explanations. A timeline and a detailed index of names conclude the volume.
