For a long time, evolutionary biologists have sought the foundation of art in the human sense of beauty. However, art is much more – it has many different facets that are often fiercely debated. There is popular, trivial, and high art; there is painting, dance, literature, film, and much more – all of which we refer to as art. It can provide us with pleasure but also provoke thought. This book examines how these many forms and aspects of art have evolved in our history. It describes how art has developed, why it fascinates us, and why it is an indispensable part of our nature.
