Punk bands with provocative names like Böhse Onkelz, Cotzbrocken, Oberste Heeresleitung, or Stosstrupp provided plenty of media fodder for what is arguably the most controversial German record label in its early days: recordings were indexed, censored, or confiscated by the public prosecutor. A few years later, the once-cult label of the punks had transformed into a globally operating right-wing rock distribution. From the mid-1980s onward, Rock-O-Rama was consistently in the crosshairs of the domestic intelligence service and remains a rich topic of discussion within German youth subcultures, political scenes, and the music underground to this day. A plethora of obscure anecdotes and outrageous stories surround the consistently media-shy company head Herbert E.: rumors about "severed ears" and the infiltration of the punk scene by the NPD circulated widely.
