Herbert Beck Miniaturen

The artist Herbert Beck (1920-2010), born in Leipzig, is known for his unusually large-format watercolors. At the same time, he also created numerous small watercolor works, which he referred to as "miniatures." A rich selection of these masterpieces is presented for the first time, transporting viewers into the poetic world of images inspired by Expressionism and Surrealism.

Due to their unique creation process, the small-format works hold a special significance in the artist's oeuvre: To properly balance the relationship between color and water in his large watercolors, Herbert Beck repeatedly brushed his color-soaked brush on pieces of paper. From these accidental color constellations, he later developed independent compositions featuring atmospheric landscapes and expressive figures. The volume showcases the wide spectrum of the "miniatures" against the backdrop of Beck's artistic development and places the works within the tradition of miniature painting in the 20th century.
