Hildegard von Bingen (1098 - 1179) is probably the most famous woman of the Middle Ages. She lived 900 years ago and her name is still known today: Thousands of pilgrims come to her grave, read her books and letters, countless people try to live according to her findings and are fascinated by her observations of people, animals and also plants. Historians are impressed by her influence, which she even had on the popes and kings of her time. The nun founded two monasteries and presided over them as abbess, she wrote poetry and compositions and was in correspondence with all the greats of her time. She preached and interpreted the Holy Scriptures, even though, as an uneducated woman, she was not entitled to do so. In May 2012 she was canonized.
