Loni Mae Murrow loves her orderly life in Washington, D.C., where she has turned her talent into a profession: she creates lifelike drawings of birds for a natural history museum. When her mother Ruth falls ill, she reluctantly follows her brother's request to return to the small town of her childhood in the Florida marshlands. For amidst the pristine landscape lie the memories of Ruth's emotional coldness and the tragic death of her father Boyd when Loni was twelve years old.
