FBI agent Amos Decker and his partner Alex Jamison travel to a small town in North Dakota to investigate the murder of a young woman whose mutilated body is found in the prairie. The Great Plains are marked by a booming fracking industry that leads to dangerous rivalries, and life in the town resembles a dance on a volcano. Soon, it becomes even more mysterious: the victim was a teacher during the day at a religious cult and an escort at night. Did she get caught in the crossfire of ruthless oil companies, shady government officials, and religious outsiders? Or was she on the trail of a completely different secret?
