Even more than the Storms' novellas, ballads like "Nis Randers", "Pidder Lüng" with his "Levvwer duad üs Slaav", the "Halligmatrose" or "Trutz, blanke Hans" shaped the public image of Friesland and the Frisians. The present anthology was compiled by the editor after extensive and often arduous research in the archives and thus finally provides renewed access to these often scattered and often almost completely lost Frisian ballads. The recorded texts, which cover a period of 150 years, are followed by explanations of the words and references to their origin. A register allows quick access to individual ballads. With this collection of material the editor makes an important contribution to the documentation of the development of the image of Friesland and Frisia in German literature.
