Herz der Finsternis / Heart of Darkness

On behalf of a Belgian trading company, Captain Marlow travels up the Congo into the wilderness of inner Africa. At every trading post, he encounters senseless chaos and a horrific exploitation of the Black population. When he learns about Kurtz, an ivory agent who leads a reckless life and engages in dubious dealings at the end of the river, he is seized by a strange fever: he is determined to meet Kurtz, and his journey turns into an exploration of the dark sides of his own self. Francis Ford Coppola based his Vietnam film "Apocalypse Now" on Conrad's novella, with Marlon Brando playing the role of Kurtz. The novel is presented here in a bilingual edition in English and German. Between disgust and fascination: a suggestive and ambivalent trip into the horrors of our past.
