On behalf of a Belgian trading company, Captain Marlow sails up the Congo into the wilderness of inner Africa. At all the trading posts he encounters senseless chaos and terrible exploitation of the blacks. When he learns of Kurtz, an ivory agent who leads a licentious life and dubious business dealings at the end of the river, he is seized by a strange fever: he is determined to meet this Kurtz, and his journey becomes a voyage of discovery to the dark side of his own self. - Francis Ford Coppola used Conrad's novel as the basis for his Vietnam film "Apocalypse Now", with Marlon Brando playing the role of Kurtz. The novel is published here in a bilingual edition in English and German.
