In the late 18th century, the natural sciences in Bremen were at an international level. Outstanding individuals such as Wilhelm Olbers, Gerhard Roth, the Treviranus brothers, Franz Carl Mertens and others advanced their respective disciplines and were known throughout the region and in some cases throughout Europe. The scientific subjects they practised - astronomy, botany, zoology and general physiology (later summarised in biology) - made significant progress thanks to them. The scientific institutions (Gesellschaft Museum, Gymnasium illustre, Astronomische Gesellschaft Lilienthal and others) contributed to this. During Bremen's French period, the establishment of a university in the city was even considered. Favoured by cooperation with trade and shipping and supported by considerable freedom, those years went down in history as a period of scientific prosperity for the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. This publication follows in the footsteps of Bremen's scientific heyday.
