Walter Gross presents the first detailed German-language scientific commentary on the Book of Judges in fifty years. Since then, particularly archaeology, but also the decline of the amphictyony hypothesis and doubts about the Deuteronomistic history have significantly changed today's perceptions of the pre-monarchic period. The commentary outlines the state of research. The final text is interpreted as such, but is made comprehensible through its background. Special attention is given to the linguistic form, the construction of the roles of God and human actors, as well as the theological accents.
