It took almost half a millennium before the two creeds commonly used in all Christian denominations were finally formulated after a long struggle. They are now more than one and a half millennia old, yet faith has evolved. Are they today documents that can only interest ancient historians? Do the more or less faithful people of the 21st century still need such antiquated expressions of faith? Certainly, the creeds bear the philosophical-theological imprint of their time of origin and also the scars of past faith struggles. However, they are the fundamental basis for the Christian self-understanding in nearly all Christian denominations and thus of paramount importance. Ulrich Lüke attempts to intellectually and honestly unlock this treasure of the past for the present and its scientifically oriented thinking. He poses to the ancient texts the questions that can and must be asked today from a scientific rationality perspective. He demonstrates that a genuine existential gain without intellectual loss is both possible and necessary.
