Product details

Berlin, New York, Provincetown, Sylt - these were the most important stages in the life of the dancer and Jew Valeska Gert (1892-1978). As the most famous grotesque dancer of the Weimar Republic, she held a unique position across Europe. Driven into exile by the Nazis, she opened a cabaret in New York where many American and exiled artists gathered. In 1947, she returned to Europe. Initially in Switzerland and then in Berlin, Valeska Gert ran an artists' venue. In 1951, she opened the "Ziegenstall" in Kampen/Sylt, a unique nightclub that also attracted celebrities. Volker Schlöndorff honored her significance to dance, cabaret, and film art with a film about her life and work in 1976/77. Siegfried Müller follows her through her life stages and incorporates the unique style of her performances into the respective time periods.
