Der hinkende Teufel in Berlin und andere Schriften

In the dead of night, the Spaniard Pedro Garcia Alvarez encounters Asmoday. The limping devil flies with him over the rooftops of Berlin, allowing him to witness the fate of the Jewish merchant Jaro Grünspan. "The Limping Devil in Berlin" was published in 1937 in the Yugoslav-Jewish cultural magazine "Omanut." After arriving in Eretz Israel in March 1945, Hinko Gottlieb translated this and other works into German. This volume gathers seven selected writings that the Croatian-Jewish author composed and translated between 1936 and 1948: The Limping Devil in Berlin, The Residence Permit, Morenu Meschulam, A Tale of Animals, The Doll Channa, The Burned Forest, and Kaddish in the Forest. In these texts, Gottlieb addresses the Jewish experience of exclusion, persecution, betrayal, and murder. However, the focus is on the question of the individual, their conception of justice, resistance, and self-determination.
