The German philologist and educator Albert Forbiger undertook in the late 19th century to publish a popular account of the public and domestic life of the Greeks and Romans, structured in six volumes, which is still very worthwhile reading today. The first section (volumes 1-3) is dedicated to ancient Rome during the time of the Antonines, while the second section (volumes 4-6) describes Greece during the time of Pericles. The present first volume of the second section provides interesting and vivid insights into living conditions and family life, describes education and teaching, types of employment and economic conditions, and sheds light on everyday matters such as fashion, hairstyles, nutrition, and much more in the public and domestic life of the Greeks in the age of Pericles. This is a reprint of the original edition from 1876.
