This dissertation addresses the darker sides of pet ownership and highlights the practical shortcomings from a criminal law perspective. It thoroughly examines problematic areas such as the killing, abandonment, or overfeeding of animals, as well as phenomena like animal hoarding and zoophilia. The analysis of the relevant provisions of animal welfare law is complemented by a critical engagement with the pertinent case law. This work aims to serve as a resource for anyone interested in animal welfare law issues related to pets. It specifically provides assistance to public prosecutors, courts, police, and veterinary authorities for the appropriate and consistent assessment of animal welfare offenses involving pets.
