Product details
The Heike Monogatari is a historical narrative, a warrior epic, a family saga, an ethical-moral instruction, a Buddhist initiation story, and a monument of Japanese literature – it encompasses all of this.
The Heike Monogatari is a central work of medieval Japanese literature and of great significance for the cultural history of Japan. Shaped by the Buddhist spirit of the time, the epic reflects the political upheavals of the 12th century, when power irretrievably shifted from the imperial family and court nobility to the samurai warrior class.
The tale of the Heike recounts the rise, rule, and fall of the sword aristocracy of the Heike, which is decisively defeated in spectacular battles by the rival clan of the Genji. Vividly and in powerful, versatile language, a large ensemble of personalities from different spheres struggles for power and dignity in an ever-changing world, grappling with loss and guilt.
The epic evokes an original, harmonious interplay of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shintoism as the foundation of Japanese civilization. Unlike most literary works of medieval Europe, the Heike Monogatari has remained alive through the centuries and continues to be widely received in the visual arts as well as in literature and pop culture in Japan.
The rise and fall of the Heike reads like the Iliad in a retelling by Akira Kurosawa.
