Johanna Spyri, born in 1827, grew up in Hirzel, a village in the canton of Zurich. In 1880 she wrote 'Heidi's Years of Learning and Wandering,' which became a worldwide success, and was followed a year later by the second volume, 'Heidi Can Use What She Has Learned'.By the time of her death, Spyri had published a total of 48 stories. She died in 1901.
