This book tells the story of 100 years of Praesens-Film AG – from 1924 to 2024. Who were its founders, its stars, and how did Praesens-Film manage to produce dialect films that addressed the "narrowness" lamented by Swiss cultural creators while also engaging with Hollywood to sell Oscar-winning Swiss films worldwide?
The focus of the book is on Lazar Wechsler, the founder of Praesens-Film. He arrived in Zurich as a refugee in 1914 and became a Swiss citizen. Here, he established the production company from which the central figures of early Swiss cinema would emerge. Many of these creative minds were Jewish exiles who had escaped Nazi Germany to Switzerland. Engaged by Lazar Wechsler, these anti-fascists were instrumental in the cinematic success of the Praesens dialect films, which were politically significant during wartime. Ironically, it was precisely these cosmopolitan exiles who contributed to the so-called spiritual national defense – making a contribution that still resonates in current debates about neutrality and the "Swiss exceptionalism." This is just one of many examples that illustrate how the upheavals of the 20th century are inscribed in Praesens films and their tumultuous production histories. Through them, the book provides an entertaining and unique insight into a whole century of social, technical, cultural, economic, and political upheaval.
