Product details

While there are a number of large, sometimes multi-volume scientific dictionaries for biblical Hebrew and Aramaic, there are very few pocket dictionaries that provide students with a quick overview of the most important German translation equivalents without requiring them to first delve into an extensive apparatus of etymology and citations. The new HAW does not aim to replace the large dictionaries but to serve as a handy companion for translation. By including and indexing the Hebrew and Aramaic vocabulary from the books of Sirach and Tobit, as well as from ancient Hebrew inscriptions, and identifying which lexemes also appear in the Hebrew texts from Qumran, it goes far beyond the well-established old HAW. It is based on the current state of modern Hebrew studies. The HAW is suitable for use in Hebrew courses, in reading exercises for the Hebrew Bible and early Jewish literature, for self-study, and for preparation for the Hebraicum. It is particularly recommended for the latter, as it assumes a good knowledge of Hebrew morphology and does not provide translations of entire passages from the Hebrew Bible.
