Despite all her efforts to provide them with a home, she struggles to run a household properly—the house itself seems to rebel against any order, and the three become increasingly isolated in the community. While the dreamy Ruthie is drawn to her aunt's unconventional, vagabond lifestyle, the younger Lucille longs for a more structured life. The two sisters grow ever more distant from each other... A poignant story about homelessness and belonging, full of magic and poetry. Pulitzer Prize winner Marilynne Robinson, still largely unknown here, is one of the most important contemporary writers.
