Product details

Hansruedi Scheller (1931-2007) was a Swiss graphic designer and signage pioneer. From around 1967 onwards, he created signage, paintings and wayfinding systems for around 230 large buildings, mainly in the cantons of Zurich and Thurgau, but also in the rest of Switzerland.
but also in the rest of Switzerland. His work has left its mark on municipal, sports and shopping centres, school buildings, hospitals, indoor swimming pools,
housing estates, multi-storey car parks, barracks and conference hotels, often designed by renowned architectural firms.
Scheller's graphic work helped people to find their way around and feel at home in the large buildings, which were new at the time. In this way
the beginnings of the discipline of signage. Scheller's name and his articles on the history of graphics and architecture have been forgotten. The discovery of his estate gave rise to this publication. It casts a new light on a time
It takes a new look at a time when large buildings became so complex that architects could no longer manage without graphic support. It thus sheds light on an aspect of late modern architecture that has received little attention to date.
Scheller's interventions make their qualities visible, but also their problems. They also show that signage
belongs to this architecture and must not be overlooked in its maintenance.
Hanruedi Scheller, who was also a successful orienteer, summarised his great experience into a few rules that are still valid today. Thomas Bruggisser, who did his apprenticeship in the Scheller studio, was able to reconstruct them,
which gives this publication the character of a textbook. Illustrated with Scheller's original photographs from the pioneering days of signage.
