Not only prominent buildings such as the Dresden Frauenkirche and the Semper Opera House, but also numerous monuments in the towns and villages of Saxony and southern Brandenburg owe their continued existence to him.Yet the preservation of the monuments was not a matter of course shortly after the end of the war due to the enormous destruction. The situation was aggravated by the fact that after 1945 his office as State Monument Conservator and later Director of the Dresden Institute for the Preservation of Monuments was embedded in an administration that was deliberately built up by the SED as an ideological instrument for the implementation of party interests. As a non-Party member and educated citizen, Nadler was always suspected of violating these interests. This book outlines the difficulties and conflicts in the exercise of his office as well as his personal career.
