Hans Baldung Grien

The scholarly engagement with the work of the painter, draftsman, and printmaker Hans Baldung Grien is about 130 years old. In comparison to contemporaries like Dürer, Grünewald, or Cranach, Baldung received too little attention for his very individual contribution to the German Renaissance. This volume aims to re-examine Baldung's work. Richly illustrated, it brings together 25 contributions from renowned international researchers who focus on various aspects of the Strasbourg artist's oeuvre. These include his collaboration with stained glass artists, the creative transformation of traditional iconography, the media-reflective approach to chiaroscuro drawing, the enigmatic representations of the Fall of Man and witches, as well as his relationship with Dürer.
