Product details
Hannah Höch is primarily known as a representative of the Dada movement and for her photo collages since the 1910s. This book presents a different, more private side of Hannah Höch: landscapes, watercolors, and miniatures, painterly retellings of memories, portraits, and plant pieces that express her philosophy of becoming and passing. The collection of the Berlin Museum Reinickendorf, which also includes her crafts and rarities she collected, documents important aspects of her life and provides insights into her personal relationships. During the time of National Socialism, she withdrew from cultural life, being defamed as a "cultural Bolshevist." A small wooden house in Heiligensee in northern Berlin offered her and her art refuge during this time of radical isolation. Here, she survived war, hunger, and loneliness and found a new beginning after 1945. Hannah Höch (1889, Gotha – 1978, Berlin) was part of the circle of Berlin Dadaists around Raoul Hausmann, George Grosz, and John Heartfield. Throughout her life, her artistic work was shaped by a progressive, emancipatory consciousness, driven by her interest in experimentation.
