Carl Hartwich was ahead of his time at the beginning of the 20th century. His work "Die menschlichen Genussmittel" from 1911 is now rarely available in antiquarian shops, and when it is, it comes at exorbitant prices. This ethnopharmacological classic documented psychotropic plants and mushrooms from around the world earlier than any other book; even today, experts sometimes wonder where the author unearthed all the diverse information. The Nachtschatten Verlag is making the original chapter on hemp available again with this newly designed reprint.

It includes information on the origin, botany, and history of hemp (Cannabis), forms of use, effective components (according to the scientific knowledge of 1911), and, of course, its effects. Treatises on hashish, culturally specific forms of paraphernalia (pipes, etc.), and psychoactive products, such as "Madjun," complete the work.
