Carbon concrete is the construction method of the future. In view of the urgent tasks to limit climate change and the careful use of limited resources, carbon concrete has exactly the right properties. It saves more than 50 % of resources, especially sand, and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 70 %.
Carbon concrete is thus a game-changer that has as much impact on construction as it does on the appearance and use of the built environment. Together with its very long life, value retention, affordability and aesthetics, it deserves to be called a disruptive innovation.
After the idea emerged almost 30 years ago and after intensive basic research within the framework of two special research areas of the DFG, the necessary application-oriented research could be carried out by the C3 - Carbon Concrete Composite consortium. This large-scale project, supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the Twenty20 programme, has shown that carbon concrete can be transferred into practice. To this end, more than 160 partners have developed all the necessary new knowledge.
The highlight and summarising result is the CUBE, the first building made entirely of carbon concrete. It consists of the "Box", which shows the possibilities of economical and modular construction, and the "Twist", which visualises the emergence of a new architectural language.
This book summarises the current state of knowledge on carbon concrete from the basics to the application and can therefore be called a standard work on new construction.
