Supervised visitation (§ 1684 Abs. 4 BGB) is offered and implemented by youth welfare services as ordered by the family court. The presence of a willing third party during visitation serves to support the child in establishing or maintaining contact after family separations, as well as to protect the child from potential harm (e.g., violence, risk of abduction, addiction, alienation) during unsupervised contact. Supervised visitation requires a child-centered perspective and approach. All parties involved must implement supervised visitation in the best interest of the child, taking the child's welfare into account. A tested and updated concept with standards for supervised visitation, referenced throughout this manual, is provided by the German Child Protection Association. This standard work illuminates all relevant legal, psychological, and educational aspects of supervised visitation from the perspective of the involved professions. The methods, techniques, tools, and special case constellations in the practice of visitation support (e.g., foster families, mental health issues, trauma, protection from violence) are presented clearly and thoroughly. For the 4th edition, the work has been completely re-conceived under new editorial leadership.
