Faust

Goethe worked on his 'Faust' from the beginnings of the Urfaust in 1772 until the completion of the second part, a year before his death, throughout his life. The fate of Faust, who makes a pact with the devil out of insatiable thirst for knowledge, becomes the subject of a metaphysical world trade between the God-Father, who believes in erring but good humanity, and Mephistopheles, the embodiment of evil. This work reflects all stages of Goethe's development, from the Sturm und Drang of youth through the classicism of maturity to the magnificent late style of Goethe. The afterword includes: The historical Faust, the folk books, Marlowe's tragedy, and the Faust plays in Germany, concerning the genesis of Goethe's Faust work, the Gretchen tragedy, and the text design.
