Endurance

In August 1914, the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling through a thousand miles of pack ice and being just a day’s sail from their destination, the Endurance became trapped in an ice floe. Thus began the legendary odyssey of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men. For ten months, the ice-bound Endurance drifted northwest before it was ultimately crushed between two ice floes. Left with no options, Shackleton and a reduced crew attempted an almost impossible journey over 850 miles through the most treacherous waters of the South Atlantic to the nearest outpost of civilization. Their survival, and the survival of the men they had left behind, depended on their small lifeboat successfully reaching the island of South Georgia – a tiny patch of land in a vast and hostile ocean.
