Elementary Teacher Training and Gender: A Male Perspective examines and describes the experiences of male aspiring elementary school teachers in a profession predominantly occupied by women. While the ratio of men to women is balancing out in more and more fields, there is one profession where men are noticeably absent and urgently needed. Male teachers are in demand in U.S. elementary schools and teacher training programs, as the need for diversification of the traditionally female-dominated profession is becoming increasingly prominent. The book addresses topics such as influences on the profession of elementary school teaching, sources of support and encouragement for entering and remaining in the profession, the lack of positive male role models, gender-specific challenges, and the development of professional identity. Additionally, it provides recommendations for appropriate target groups and further research, and suggests implications for the recruitment, training, and retention of male elementary school teachers.
