The development tasks of vehicle engineering can only be effectively addressed based on the relevant fundamentals. Therefore, the focus of the book is on a detailed and as comprehensible as possible presentation and application of the theoretical foundations of longitudinal, lateral, and vertical dynamics. Part I deals with the definition of essential vehicle parameters and forces, wheel and tire characteristics, commonly used standards and regulations, as well as the 3F methodology, which forms the basis for representative design and testing in vehicle engineering. Part II examines driving resistances, traction demands, drive concepts, starting aggregates, transmissions, locks, all-wheel drive systems, and brakes, as well as energy consumption and emissions. Part III addresses the self-steering behavior and the relationships between vehicle parameters and dynamic vehicle characteristics using single-track and two-track models, selected driving maneuvers, and considering single-axle and all-wheel steering. Furthermore, steering characteristics and active chassis and control systems are explained. Part IV is dedicated to vehicle vertical dynamics based on vibration models of varying complexity, associated motion equations, and country-specific road irregularities. Additionally, methods for assessing dynamic seating comfort are presented, along with explanations of spring and damper setups.
