Development tasks in vehicle technology can only be dealt with effectively on the basis of the corresponding fundamentals. Therefore, the focus of the book is on the detailed and most comprehensible presentation and application of theoretical principles of longitudinal, lateral and vertical dynamics. The general part I deals with the definition of essential vehicle parameters and forces, wheel and tyre characteristics, frequently used standards and regulations as well as the 3F methodology, which is the basis of representative design and testing in vehicle technology. In Part II, driving resistances, adhesion stress, drive concepts, starting units, transmissions, locks, all-wheel drive systems and brakes as well as energy consumption and emissions are considered. Part III deals with the self-steering behaviour as well as the correlations between the vehicle parameters and the vehicle dynamic driving characteristics on the basis of single- and two-track models as well as selected driving manoeuvres and taking single-axle and all-wheel steering into account. Furthermore, steering characteristics as well as active chassis and control systems are explained. Part IV is dedicated to vehicle vertical dynamics on the basis of vibration models of varying complexity, associated equations of motion and country-specific measured road unevenness. In addition, methods for assessing dynamic seat comfort are presented and body springs and dampers are explained.
