Bachelor's thesis from 2020 in the field of Social Work, grade: 1.3, Evangelische Fachhochschule Freiburg, language: German.
Abstract: Between 1.5 to 3 million children and adolescents in Germany grow up with at least one mentally ill parent. These children belong to a risk group as they are exposed to excessive stress in their home environment. While adults often find support through psychotherapy, children are usually left to cope on their own. What assistance can social workers offer to these children?
Our author examines the specific psychological risks faced by children with mentally ill parents. She analyzes three common mental health conditions: schizophrenia, affective disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. She places particular emphasis on how children experience their parents' illness and how it affects their lives.
The book explores the topic in a relatable manner from an empirical perspective and presents the exact living conditions of various children. Additionally, the author considers coping strategies that can provide children with a way out and outlines various support services available. This book addresses a socially and educationally important issue from a psychological perspective.
Contents include: - Resilience, - Vulnerability, - Coping, - Social Pedagogy, - Childhood, - Counseling Processes.
