Study paper from 2014 in the field of Economics - Innovation Economics, grade: 1.7, University of Kassel (Institute for Economics - Department of Economic Policy), course: Innovation Networks, language: German.

Abstract: Networks and their structures surround the world in various ways. They range from social contacts in the human and animal realms to power grids and information technology. The exploration of relationships within networks represents a promising subject of investigation for science. In particular, the area of the Small World phenomenon, despite its initial description by Milgram in 1969, still offers relevant research questions today. This paper aims to present some social science publications on the topic of Small Worlds in more detail.

It begins with a section on norms and description possibilities of the field of networks, which particularly serve to develop the concepts presented here. This is followed by an introduction to Milgram's studies, complemented by a more widely known variation of the original Milgram experiment. The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon will exemplarily illustrate the Small World approach.

Subsequently, a current scientific paper by Uzzi and Spiro from 2005 is examined. Based on empirical data on musicals on Broadway in New York, a hypothesis regarding the relationship between size and innovative power/creativity of Small World networks is tested. Specifically, the methodological approach, the results of the study, and some background information on the New York musical business are presented.

In conclusion, a summary of the insights gained from this paper will be drawn. Ultimately, the following outlook will highlight possible applications and further research subjects.
