Product details

Where are the limits of artistic freedom? Debates over opinions and artistic expressions have existed since ancient times. With Cancel Culture, often amplified by the media in discussions about correct art and opinion, these debates have taken on a new dimension. The discussions can become excessive, but they should be based on a precise understanding of the freedoms of opinion, art, and science as defined and limited by the Basic Law. Legal scholar Christoph Möllers stated in a report for the Minister of State for Culture regarding the removal of an anti-Semitic painting from documenta 15 in Kassel: "The freedom of art can also protect against state interference in cases of racist or anti-Semitic tendencies within the framework of proportionality. This is the liberal scandal of the constitutional order." The Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts addresses the question of the limits of artistic freedom in a lecture series. In seven contributions, the legal, artistic, philosophical, and cultural aspects of artistic freedom will be presented and discussed by scholars and artists. Contributions will be made by: Andreas Beck, Alexander Eisenach, Gert Heidenrich, Peter Jelavich, Andrea Kern, Stefan Korioth, Julian Nida-Rümelin, and Matthias Politycki.
