AUTHOR: Lion FeuchtwangerLion Feuchtwanger, 1884-1958, was a novelist and cosmopolitan. His novels sold millions of copies and were published in over 20 languages. When Lion Feuchtwanger died at the age of 74, he was regarded as one of the most important writers in the German language. The stages of his life from Munich to Berlin, his extensive travels as far as Africa, his exile in Sanary-sur-Mer in France and in Pacific Palisades, California, led the writer, whose tireless creative power was admired even by his neighbour in California, Thomas Mann, to an unusually broad knowledge and understanding of cultural history. 15 novels as well as theatre plays, short stories, reports, sketches, reviews and criticism had allowed the friend and employee of Bertold Brecht to mature into a "master of the historical and contemporary novel" (Wilhelm von Sternburg). With his "Wartesaal Trilogy", the enlightened humanist proved himself to be a clear-sighted chronicler of Nazi Germany.BY: Fritz Rudolf FriesFritz Rudolf Fries was born in Bilbao (Spain) in 1935 and grew up there and in Leipzig. He studied Romance languages and literature in Leipzig from 1953-58, worked as an interpreter and translator from Spanish and French from 1958-60 and was a research assistant at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin from 1960-66. He has lived in Petershagen near Berlin since 1966. He is a member of the P.E.N. (East), the Academy of Arts in Berlin and the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt. Among other honours, he received the Literature Prize of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and the Brandenburg Literature Prize in 1991.
