No other author has described the racial conflict in America as consistently and passionately over the decades as Nobel Prize-winning writer Toni Morrison. It is another major novel from the author committed to the fight against racism. Lula Ann is such a deep black baby that her mother, Sweetness, is almost scared to death at her birth, and the father leaves the young family on the spot because he cannot believe that this child is his. Sweetness raises Lula Ann to be obedient and submissive, teaching her not to stand out for fear of racist attacks. However, the growing daughter resists the imposed conformity. She changes her name to Bride and dresses in provocatively bright white.
