Product details

In his lucid essay, the Italian thinker and philosopher Stefano Levi Della Torre traces the mystery of the religious and the divine that permeates the rationalist and agnostic present. According to Levi Della Torre, the idea of God holds our cultural universe together - even if it has long since left this world. In order to reconstruct this void, he explores the statics of a structure that maintains the idea of the divine even in its absence. He states: Since the end of the age of religion, we have been living in a state of systemic uncertainty that opens the door to the sacred as the terrible unknown; for it was religion that "tamed the sacred and brought it down to human dimensions". What religion leaves behind is at the same time what it first produced: We encounter the paradox that God explains what all explanations fail to do.

In his reflections between philosophy and anthropology, in which he scrutinises the Jewish and Christian traditions with regard to their understanding of God, Stefano Levi Della Torre creates a secular theology. He says of himself: "God is my witness that I am not a believer.".
