Goethe Faust

Johann W. von Goethe, born on August 28, 1749, in Frankfurt a.M., died on March 22, 1832, in Weimar. He studied law in Leipzig and Strasbourg and spent his lifelong work in Weimar. He traveled to the Rhine, Switzerland, Italy, and Bohemia. He achieved early success with the Sturm und Drang plays "Götz" and "Werther," as well as poems, epics, and dramas, including "Faust," "Tasso," and "Iphigenie." Goethe was a draftsman and polymath with interests in botany, morphology, mineralogy, and optics. He was also a theater director and statesman. He maintained friendships and correspondence with the greatest poets, thinkers, and researchers of his time, such as Schiller, Humboldt, and Schelling. Goethe coined the term world literature and is recognized as the first and most outstanding German representative of this concept.
