About Lake Garda as a holiday destination
'When God painted the world, the colours fell from his hand at Lake Garda and poured over the land. The inhabitants of the lake, which is embedded in the three Italian provinces of Veneto, Lombardy and Trentino, proudly tell this story. It's true, when you see the countless shades of blue, green and turquoise that the changing wind, weather and time of day conjure up on the water and the blaze of colour with which the lush Mediterranean vegetation unfolds on the shores and slopes, it's easy to believe this story.
The lake's landscape is as varied as its colour palette: in the north it is alpine, rugged and forbidding, fjord-like and with high cliffs, while towards the south the mountains become hills that disappear into the wide Po plain. Palm trees, lemons, olives and mimosas thrive here in the gentle light, impregnating the air with a Mediterranean fragrance.
Every summer, an increasing number of visitors come from near and far to enjoy the marvellous landscape. During the high season, however, you need a little patience when the queues of cars on the Gardesana Orientale and Gardesana Occidentale - the panoramic roads on the right and left side of the lake respectively - creep along. Nevertheless, Lake Garda has remained a little corner of paradise: Just a short distance away from the major tourist centres, hidden gems can be discovered every day.
