After the salve maker Olivera receives the news of her grandmother's death, she sinks into deep mourning. To find distraction, she works even more than usual at the Holy Spirit Hospital. However, when an elderly man and a new mother die in quick succession, the hospital master makes serious accusations against her. By order of the council, she is arrested, but on the way to prison, the executioner helps her escape. Alone, heavily pregnant, and seriously injured, Olivera flees the city and is in mortal danger.
