How can I communicate as a giraffe when the world seems full of wolves? Marshall Rosenberg worked with two metaphors in his seminars: the giraffe and the wolf. Both animals represent certain attitudes and ways of communicating. The wolf tends to judge, blame, and create shame. In contrast, the giraffe is empathetic and speaks a language of the heart. This is why Nonviolent Communication is often referred to as giraffe language. What is special about giraffe language? Rosenberg explores this with seminar participants using concrete everyday situations. It becomes clear: when empathetic listening and sharing feelings and needs become the foundation of our contact with ourselves and others, our quality of life improves.
