Gypsum is a mineral salt of great industrial and commercial importance, primarily used for the production of plaster, cement manufacturing, and as a fertilizer and soil conditioner in agriculture. Despite its commercial significance, there are only a few books on gypsum. This book provides a summary of current knowledge on gypsum mining and international trade in gypsum. It also describes and analyzes Mauritania's experiences in this field, a country that possesses one of the largest gypsum reserves in the world. Finally, the book presents a concrete example of the opportunities and challenges associated with the exploitation of mineral resources in Africa and access to international markets. Aimed at a potentially broad professional audience, the book also advocates for greater use of products made from gypsum. Gypsum can contribute to sustainable development, reduce carbon emissions, and aid in climate change adaptation due to its recyclability, circularity, and low carbon footprint.
